Winners of the 2014 Goya Award for Best Makeup and Hair Styling for *Musarañas*.

A Goya Award for the *Musarañas* Team

Pedro Rodríguez «Pedrati,» José Quetglas, and Carmen Veinat were honored with the Goya Award for Best Makeup and Hair Styling for their work on *Musarañas* (Shrew’s Nest). The film received three nominations at the 29th edition of the awards and ultimately won the prize in this category.

This award recognizes the collaborative effort to craft the visual identity of a film in which makeup, hair styling, and character effects play a pivotal role. Every detail had to blend naturally with the setting, the characters, and the story’s dramatic arc.

Character Design in Service of the Narrative

In a production like *Musarañas*, makeup serves as more than just an aesthetic element; it is a narrative tool that helps convey the passage of time, the characters’ physical and emotional deterioration, their injuries, and the consequences of the events unfolding on screen.

The work had to be expressive on camera without sacrificing realism. Achieving this required coordinating design, preparation, application, continuity, and finishing touches, all while maintaining visual consistency throughout the shoot.

The Film Academy’s own magazine highlighted that the award represented the entire team’s commitment and a process in which every element was carefully considered.

A Shared Achievement

Although the Goya specifically honors the work of Pedro Rodríguez «Pedrati,» José Quetglas, and Carmen Veinat, the result was made possible through collaboration across makeup, hair styling, directing, cinematography, costume design, art direction, and production, as well as the entire technical and artistic crew.

For this reason, at Pedro Rodríguez Studio, we view this award as a shared achievement with everyone who participated in the production and helped turn the film’s visual concept into reality.

A film with a distinctive visual identity

*Musarañas* was directed by Esteban Roel and Juanfer Andrés. In addition to winning the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the film was nominated for the Goya for Best New Director, and Macarena Gómez received a nomination for Best Leading Actress.

Character makeup played a crucial role in reinforcing the film’s oppressive atmosphere and reflecting the characters’ transformations. The Academy’s recognition underscores the importance of makeup and special effects departments in shaping cinematic language.

A new milestone for Pedro Rodríguez Studio

This Goya Award cemented Pedro Rodríguez Studio’s standing in the fields of prosthetic makeup, character design, and special effects for cinema.

The studio continues to apply this same blend of creativity, technical precision, and craftsmanship to projects across film, television, advertising, theater, museums, and events—creating prosthetics, dummies, animatronics, sculptures, props, and hyper-realistic pieces tailored to the specific needs of each production.
